This is called spaying. We are in fact removing both ovaries and the uterus (womb). This is called an ovariohysterectomy in humans. Please note that dogs do not undergo a menopause (lucky them) so there is no need to worry about this.

No unwanted pregnancy
No messy bleeding every 6 months (for 3 weeks)
No false pregnancies (bitches commonly nest, become grumpy and may even produce milk 6-10 weeks after a season)
Prevents pyometra (pyometra literally means pus in the womb. It is a very common occurrence in older, unneutered bitches, is life threatening and requires urgent major, and expensive, surgery)
Greatly reduces the risk of breast cancer

Neutered animals put weight on more easily
There is a slightly greater risk of urinary incontinence (less than 0.3%)
